Top 5 Things to Look For in a Good Host
1) How long has the company been around? - If the company is new then it's not worth wasting your money on even if they do have everything as a company - if you can't see how established and reliable a hosting company is then you can't see your website being online 24/7 or as much as you would like. I'd class a reliable hosting company as one that has been round for a few years and is fairly populated - one that their current clients love.
2) Always check the support - Do random emails and pop onto their live chat support through-out the day whenever possible and if you're always getting constant replies within an hour (quicker obviously being better) then you can be sure that this hosting company provides decent support and if anything offers a true 24/7 support feature for their clients - that's a good web host already.
3) Does their image look promising? - If the specific hosting company is committed to the hosting industry then they would of hired a professional development team to produce their website and its contents. If it looks like they've hired a toddler to create their website then it's likely that the company isn't a professional one. Image is everything with a business no matter how big or small - you definitely wouldn't eat in a restaurant if it looked poorly kept from the outside no matter how good the food tastes.
4) How far are they willing to go? - A lot of hosting companies will negotiate features, space and bandwidth to get you on their client base, there is no harm in trying to lowball them as much as possible even if they do say no as a lot of hosting providers would rather take something than nothing.
5) How big is their client base? - You're never going to be able to find out an easy way unless the company are kind enough to tell you. Look around the net and you will find reviews and good feedback from previous and current clients. If they are a good hosting company yet they don't have a very big client base then it's likely they are not established and therefore haven't been around for long (unless they are doing something completely wrong).
